Dinosaurs actively hunting you down as the player-controlled protagonist Regina tries to escape an island crawling with thought-to-be-extinct monsters is the horror-centric spin on Jurassic Park that dreams are made of.


Plus, with Capcom releasing back-to-back remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3 to success and critical acclaim (at least for RE2), a return of Dino Crisis feels more like an inevitability than a fleeting hope.

8 ) Dino Crisis 2 (Playstation 1)

I hope in this list I might spark some nostalgia for some of you readers, as I’m hoping to create quite an unconventional and personal top 10. Dino Crisis 2! Now there was a game! I remember borrowing this game from a friend at my junior school (a step up from kindergarten for any transatlantic reader) and all he told me was that “the Dinosaurs in it look so realistic.” I can safely say that, with today’s advances is graphical depth and opulence, the Dinosaurs looked really shit. So bad in fact, that during one brief sequence you were instructed to “shoot that crazy dinosaur bitch in the eye”, and I couldn’t make out for the life of me where exactly the eye was! Nevertheless, it was essentially Resident Evil but with Dinosaurs instead of the Undead.

Most standout memory: Walking down a corridor and having a gigantic T-Rex head come smashing through the right hand wall. If you got too close, its screams would suck you in its mouth and you would die. Plain and simple. Some jumpy, freaky shiz.

#38. – Dino Crisis 2​

Perhaps I’m playing things a bit loosely here by including this one because Dino Crisis 2 is more of an action game than most others on this list. Ammunition is much more plentiful and you’ll deal with more dinosaurs here than in the original. In some ways it feels like a run and gun, and this is further heightened by the lack of jump scares this time around. This wasn’t the sequel to Dino Crisis I wanted, but truth be told, it’s still one of the best survival horror games around even if it’s lacking on the survival aspect.

Have you ever wanted to play Resident Evil, but with dinosaurs instead of zombies? Well Dino Crisis has your back. It’s actually very interesting to me that Capcom made another survival horror game when Resident Evil was so popular. Either way, you play as a redhead gal who has to escape an island inhabited by dinosaurs. You’ve got plenty of guns, but not that many bullets. You have to manage your supplies as much as in the classic Resident Evil games and that adds a lot to the tension. There are some really great encounters and set pieces here, and I absolutely love me some Jurassic Park inspired games. Dino Crisis is amazing.

Dino Crisis may have used many elements from the Resident Evil series, but it’s a terrifying horror title that deserves to stand separate from Capcom’s zombie-romp.


In fact, the original Dino Crisis is, at times, even scarier than the two Resident Evil games that preceded it. Velociraptors may not be rotting corpses, but their persistence and ability to crash through doors, leaving you with little choice but to expend precious ammo on them, gave gamers quite the jump. Even the lumbering tyrannosaur, a dinosaur many of us have treasured since adolescence, found ways to be scary.


Though many movies have tried, Dino Crisis is the first across any medium to successfully root dinosaurs in horror (though Jurassic Park came really close).

A lot of the games on this list don’t highlight one feature of dinosaurs: if they were to coexist with us we would be constantly terrified for our survival. Capcom’s Dino Crisis was a survival horror game that made your heart leap out of your chest every time one of the streamlined reptiles rounded a corner. It’s a classic for a reason, making players scared of something other than zombies or ghosts.

20. Dino Crisis​

Resident Evil may be Capcom's most well-known survival-horror franchise, but there are many horror enthusiasts who hold Dino Crisis in just as high regard. The original Dino Crisis game plays like Resident Evil with dinosaurs, or a gore-filled, ultra-violent take on Jurassic Park. Dino Crisis is home to one of the best jump scares in video game history, when the T-Rex smashes its skull through a window in an attempt to kill protagonist Regina. There have been rumors of a new Dino Crisis game over the years, though nothing has materialized. Hopefully when Capcom is done remaking all the Resident Evil games, it will spend some time giving Dino Crisis the new coat of paint it deserves.
