Hey guys
I did a bit of investigating today to determine the ultimate LCD champion of SA. Before someone starts shouting about Loewe and brands like that - get real, no one can afford that stuff...
I went to Tafelberg Furnishers in Bellville. A fantastic shop with good, friendly service with people who actually look like they enjoy what they are doing.
To test these puppies properly, I took my Xbox 360 along with me. The games I tested were Project Gotham Racing 3 and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter. Various other game demos downloaded from Xbox Marketplace were also used. Demos included: Fight Night 3, Prey, Ninety-Nine Nights and Rockstar's Tabletennis.
I also brought along one of my DVD's, Jurassic Park to test the quality of the DVD upscaling. The 360’s DVD capabilities are very good – I read a CNET review that pitted it against their reference quality Denon player and the 360 surprised them greatly by almost matching the Denon.
The 360 was connected via component cable at 720p resolution.
Samsung LA32R71
First off, here is the URL to the set:
http://www.samsung.com/za/products/t...v/la32r71b.asp
The Samsung is a sexy little devil. It boasts a high contrast ratio of 5000:1 which is boosted artificially by a process called Dynamic Contrasting. This basically means that the TV will determine the optimal contrast ratio for the given image on the fly by boosting the power to the backlight. Claims boast about brilliant blacks etc.
First thing I popped in was GRAW. GRAW looked pretty damn good and seemed to run nice and smooth. Colours were reproduced with accuracy and there was little evidence of graininess. No ghosting was observed.
I then popped PGR3 in. The first thing that was very evident about the Samsung was that it seemed to accentuate PGR3’s lack of FSAA. The image was rather grainy and looked rather washed out in the brightly lit London races. The aliasing really got to me, so I decided to bump the 360 up to 1080i to see if it helped. Nope… Oh well, it must just be PGR3’s rushed gfx engine… Or so I thought…
Next up was Jurassic Park on DVD. I switched to the dark T-Rex attack scene to check out Samsung’s claims. Oh my word! Bleh! Not good – not good at all! The image was horribly grainy and full of artefacts. General DVD playback was pretty crap. Oh well, DVD is considered low resolution now – must be the DVD… Or so I thought…
Next up, Sony’s Bravia V series…
Sony Bravia KLV-V32A10
The URL to the Sony site:

The Sony isn’t as sexy as the Samsung, but the overall design of the set is pleasant on the eyes and looks top-draw.
Sony 0 – Samsung 1.
The Sony has a contrast ratio of 1300:1 so I was initially not that optimistic about it competing with the Samsung in the ‘deep black’ stakes. One thing to note is that these TV’s use virtually an identical panel – Samsung and Sony have formed and alliance to compete with LG-Philips in LCD panel production.
GRAW is in and the amazement begins… Damn! Wow! S***! That looks mighty fine! The advert doesn’t lie – ‘colour like no other’. The image was vibrant and colours almost seem to create a 3D effect they were so brilliantly reproduced. The image itself seemed to be more ‘immediate’. I’m not saying that the Samsung lagged – the Sony just felt more fluid. There was absolutely no ghosting whatsoever. Brilliant.
Sony 1 – Samsung 0.
PGR3 time again. Wow! Where did the aliasing go? Awesome! It has not entirely disappeared, but is was drastically reduced. All the people who had gathered around commented that there was a night and day difference between the Samsung and the Sony in this respect. Brilliant colour reproduction and overall presentation, much like with GRAW.
Sony 1 – Samsung 0.
Jurassic Park back in and… Oh my word… Who swopped my DVD for an HD-DVD? It was absolutely incredible. The picture quality is absolutely superb. Not a hint of graininess whatsoever and the dark T-Rex scene was reproduced perfectly. Again, the people gathered around found the Sony’s upconverting skills to be light-years ahead of the Samsung. If you will be using this set primarily for DVD viewing, you’re in for a treat. J
Sony 1 – Samsung 0.
Summary
To be quite honest I expected A LOT more from the Samsung. I had virtually made up my mind to buy the Samsung before I had tested it thoroughly based purely on looks and the spec sheet. That would have been a BIG mistake. The Sony Bravia delivers on its promises – it is an absolutely brilliant set that makes the Samsung look amateurish.
Now to factor in the price. You can grab the Samsung at Tafelberg for R15500 and the Sony for R17999. Sony actually just started a promotion on the Bravia – it used to retail for R22000… I asked the salesman if it was a limited promotion and he seemed to think not. Is the difference in quality worth the extra R2500? HELL YEAH! It seems that Sony are finally back in the Consumer Electronics Business with a vengeance. It is a brilliant product and I will definitely be getting one. For all the 360 fanbois out there – think of the irony of having your 360 display on a Sony set :P lol
Cheers guys - hope this was helpful.
