Puppeteeris one such something. A sidescrolling platformer taking the form of a childrens' puppet show isn't exactly a boardroom's dream concept, but Sony has put its muscle behind the project, and created a game with no small amount of charm.
Puppeteer does try to aim for everyone. It may host an E10+ rating, but the story and characters are so rooted in traditional fairytales and mythology it would be easy to apply to any age. The game also takes cues from earlier platformers and adventure games. Imagine: LittleBigPlanet’s aesthetics,Zelda’s plot items, Mario’s platforming, and God of War’s boss finishers, all dancing on the same strings. And then there’s a lot more. The journey’s seven acts and 21 stages encompass a wide range of locations and situations.
Sometimes all it takes is one great idea. In that regard, Puppeteer, by Sony's Japan Studio, is off to a strong start. It has several great ideas. Sadly, it doesn't seem to know what to do with them.
Actually, the canned laughter is only one of several problems with what at first appears to be an intriguing and noble new effort to spice up the stolid platforming genre. Puppeteer does a few things right, but there’s also so much it gets wrong.
