“Kena” is Ember Lab’s debut game, but they have experience with artistically adapting the styles and sensibilities of other properties. They have animated commercials for corporations, for example, and created a popular tribute to “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.” For better or worse, their knack for adaptation is also evident in “Kena’s” gameplay, which brings to mind “Pikmin,” “Horizon: Zero Dawn” and the recent “God of War,” among other games. On those merits, “Kena” isn’t especially inventive, but the game is an entertaining hodgepodge of tried-and-true ideas. A sense of deja vu certainly emerges. But one scarcely notices it during the brisk battles or amid the splendors and astonishments of the enveloping forests.​

After playing a couple of great AAA 3D platformers earlier this year, I'm absolutely blown away that I enjoyed Kena: Bridge of Spirits even more. With thoroughly challenging fast-paced combat, rewarding puzzles, and a breathtaking world; it's one phenomenal game.

It first pulls out the folk culture and religious culture in the east Asian cultural circle from other art forms, and then injects it into Disney-like painting style, which combines to produce a wonderful chemical reaction that makes "Kena: Bridge of Spirits" impressive enough.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is passionate. Both the story and the graphics don't disappoint, and the fact that it came from a small developer, like an indie game, is a positive surprise. The protagonist's main weapon, the staff, has interesting upgrades, and her relationship with the Rot is a high point of the plot, although they aren't always very functional. However, the imbalance and lack of diversity of the bosses dampen some of the excitement that has built up with the title since its announcement, even if that's not strong enough to totally discourage the player.

For those who prioritize combat, you may be left frustrated. But I prioritize a beautiful world, wonderful music, magnificent platforming, and phenomenal tech. And on those grounds alone, Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a triumph, an utterly brilliant experience. And when each of those parts are this good, this lovingly crafted, this polished, it’s incredibly difficult to ignore. Ember Lab have created something truly special. This is a gem. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is the best game I’ve played all year. And you should play it.

With a charming and nice adventure, Kena Bridge of Spirits invites us in a cute and dark world. The gameplay is rather simple but offers interesting mechanics that allow you to have a good time no matter what happens. With tons of resources to collect and an original scenario, Kena is clearly the kind of independent title that you want to finish. And this is perhaps its biggest strength: a relaxing game, with a challenge, that you want to finish at 100%. In the end, Kena doesn't invent much but offers a beautiful and memorable journey.

In the event that your soul is inhospitably frosty, Kena can be deceivingly challenging, throwing boss fights at you that will make those on Demon Souls look like a cake walk. A few minor issues stop Kena from being a showstopper, but there is no doubt that this a great game, and an amazing debut for a 15-person strong team."​

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is an extremely entertaining action platformer that is sure to appeal to fans of the genre. The great calling card of this title is the style and the graphic splendor, and we can't really say anything critical about that. The game lasts about 8 to 10 hours, where you definitely get your money's worth. As far as the gameplay is concerned, Kena doesn't do much innovative – with the exception of the Rot – but it's all so refined that it plays very nicely. All elements come together very well and Kena: Bridge of Spirits is actually a must-have for anyone who has a warm heart for these kinds of games. A few technical flaws stand out, but these certainly don't spoil the great fun you will undoubtedly have with this beautiful title. With their first 'big' game, Ember Lab puts down a great title that you should not miss.

Although far from being revolutionary, Kena Bridge of Sprits is a compelling action-adventure game with an heart-warming hero and really cute creatures to play with.
