Hello Assassins and welcome to the very first installment of the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood Developer Blog. I’m Gabe Graziani, your ever-devoted Community Developer, and I am very pleased to bring you the very first of many entries. Before we get into it, allow me to explain a little about what we are doing here. Although I will be writing the first couple of entries in the Dev Blog, future entries will come directly from the developers themselves… creators talking about their creation. Our goal is bring you closer to the people that are actually hard at work making Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and give you an insight into what they do and how they do it. We’ll also throw in some explanation of features and things like that.
To begin, let’s talk about… well, what this blog entry is titled after all: The World of Assassin’s Creed.
Central to Assassin’s Creed is the on-going battle between the Assassins and the Templars, who are both mysterious groups, shrouded from the view of the average person. They both work in the shadows, concealed from normal society, but have very different objectives. While the Templars seek power and wish to control the lives of the general population (and will stop at nothing in their ruthless pursuit of this goal), the Assassins desire only to secure free will for every person on the planet. Typically, historically, in the world of Assassin’s Creed, this puts the Templars and Assassins at odds.
But there is another essential ingredient that fuels this ongoing battle and that is the existence of powerful artifacts that can control the fabric of our universe. Referred to in Assassin’s Creed as Pieces of Eden, we have seen one of these artifacts in both Assassin’s Creed and Assassin’s Creed 2: the Apple of Eden. Ostensibly a grapefruit-sized metallic orb etched with a tracery of lines, this object has been associated with some of the most pivotal people and moments in history. The exact powers of the Apple of Eden are not fully known, but we have discovered through the glyph puzzles in Assassin’s Creed 2 that the Apple has been in the possession of great leaders of the past, such as George Washington, Napoleon Bonaparte, Nikola Tesla and Winston Churchill… though it remains unclear as to whether any of these individuals were affiliated with either the Assassins or Templars.
Yet, the Apple of Eden is just one of several Pieces of Eden, the locations of which are a closely guarded secret. We know, however, that both Altaïr and Ezio were shown the locations of the other Pieces of Eden after acquiring the Apple of Eden and their interactions with the Apple give us clues to the origin and purpose of the Pieces of Eden.
And that, in a somewhat distilled form, are the major features of the Assassin’s Creed Universe. It is by no means comprehensive, but that leaves plenty for us to discuss in future installments of this very blog!
Welcome back to the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood Dev Blog! This week we have part 2 of our recap on the events of Assassin’s Creed and Assassin’s Creed II. We left off after Desmond’s escape from the Abstergo laboratory.
Using the memories that Lucy stole from Abstergo during their daring escape from the laboratory, Desmond entered the Animus in the Assassins' Hideout and engaged the memory of a new ancestor: Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Ostensibly the son of a successful banker, Ezio was heir to a position in the Order of Assassins and a crucial figure in Assassin history. Using Ezio as something of a vehicle, Desmond examined Ezio's memories in order to train for the on-going struggle against the Templars working under the banner of Abstergo Industries.
In the process of exploring Ezio's memories, Desmond became aware of strange new capabilities in himself that awakened through his contact with his ancestors' memories. Dubbed the "Bleeding Effect," this side-effect of using the Animus causes the experience and expertise of ancestors to "bleed" into an Animus user. Unfortunately, the Bleeding Effect often manifests with similar symptoms to multiple personality disorder, driving affected individuals insane... which appeared to be the fate suffered by Desmond's predecessor, Subject 16.
[SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT!]
After witnessing Ezio's climactic encounter with the Pope in Rome, Desmond relived a seemingly baffling memory in which Ezio descended into The Vault and met Minerva, a mysterious and luminous entity. Curiously, Minerva clearly stated a wish to speak to Desmond rather than Ezio (a point which confounded poor Ezio completely) and told of an ancient apocalypse visited on her demi-godly race and the fledgling humans who lived alongside them. Minerva also spoke of other temples that contain the means to prevent another on-rushing catastrophe.
Emerging from the Animus with the newly-discovered information that ancient artifacts necessary to the wellbeing of the entire planet were hidden around the world in secret locations, Lucy alerted Desmond of an impending Abstergo assault on the Assassins' Hideout. Knowing that they were ill-equipped to hold off a full-scale attack, Desmond, Lucy, Shaun and Rebecca fled the melee in a truck after a brief encounter with Dr. Warren Vidic... but not before Desmond got to try out his newfound hidden blade skills on a few of Vidic's henchmen.
Although Desmond learned much through his contact with the Animus, it is clear that more essential data remains locked inside of Ezio's memories. As this small band of Assassins races to safety, questions play through Desmond's beleaguered mind… and there is only one way he can answer them. Donning the numerous leads and electrodes of the Animus, Desmond prepares to return to Renaissance-era Italy in the hopes of solving a riddle that could spell doom for the entire planet.
Once a young noble driven by vengeance, Ezio Auditore da Firenze has matured into something greater. In Brotherhood, players will encounter someone older, someone who holds back and plans rather than allowing emotions to control him. Ezio fought primarily on his own in the previous game, but in order to defeat the Borgia family and revive the Assassin Order in Rome, he’ll need to learn to become a leader.
The journey he will embark on in Brotherhood will be his toughest yet, but Ezio has the charisma and strength to make difficult decisions, he took on the Pope in Assassin’s Creed 2 after all .
