The Evil Within is horrible. I mean that in the best way, of course. A good survival-horror game is a brilliant, heart-thumping, sweat-beading experience, and the original game from Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami, is exactly that. It’s a malicious, brutal, tense, atmospheric beast of a thing; it digs into your mind through your eyeballs and etches pure fear onto the inside of your brain. And it’s awesome.
Snatching the number 1 spot is none other than the very first new monster we collectively clasped eyes on at Bethesda’s E3 showcase. What is it with horror games, long corridors and figures standing at the end of them? It’s like someone has done their research and realised that this is the ultimate way to freak people out.
Right at the start of the trailer, Seb is peering down a corridor that is flooded with an eerie, blue mist. Right at the end is a looming presence with gently floating robes and a flickering light illuminating it. After it stands there for a few seconds, suddenly it runs at you, like a freaky Dementor from Harry Potter but on legs. It’s easily the scariest monster from the trailer, and we’re apprehensively eager to see how it’s involved in the game.
