r/Games - "We were wrong with the premise that you will be happiest if you work on something you personally want to work on the most" ~ Valve developer
A Valve developer admitted that the company had to change their no-management style of everyone working on whatever they wanted to work on the most to get Half Life: Alyx published. This followed almost a decade of projects that would get cancelled without ever seeing the light of day.
Previously Valve was loud and proud about their system where everyone in the company would choose to work on what ever they thought was best. The way it was described is that to get a project started you needed to convince colleagues it was worth doing, and if they believed it was a dead end they'd shift their time to another project. Their handbook has info on this style.
But their style seems to have collapsed, with one of the Portal 2 writers describing the writing staff as "The highest paid blog-post writers of all time", and it sounds like Half Life: Alyx represents a shift in strategy.
