Swap Magic 3 Playstation 2 DVD

Swap Magic is a disc (available in CD and DVD formats) which allows users to play backed-up, pirated, or foreign PlayStation 2 games on their PlayStation 2.

The PlayStation 2 first boots the Swap Magic disc; the user must then "swap" the Swap Magic disc with their back-up, pirated or import disc, and press the X button. This allows the manually burned CD to fake authorisation with the PlayStation 2 as the authorisation is performed on the Swap Magic disc, which is taken from a real PS2 disc.

There are many ways of enabling swapping. In original PlayStation 2 models, a "Slide Card" is available. The front of the CD tray must be removed and the slide card is used to eject the disc without the console knowing.

For the newer, Slim PlayStation 2, there are many more options, namely: replacing the original top-loading lid with a new one that allows for easy swapping, or installation of a "Magic Switch" which allows the original lid to be opened without the system realizing it. More information about "Magic Switch" can be found in SwapMagic3 Official Web Site.

Many other versions of the slimtool have subsequently been released, and swap magic is still a very popular method of playing back ups.

Swap Magic discs cannot be backed up as they are pressed using the same copy protection used in Playstation 2 game discs.
How it Works

The authentication system for the PlayStation2 is twofold. When a disc is placed in the drive, the PlayStation2 first checks the media type of the disc. After detecting mediatype the PS2 looks for an engraved barcode in the Burst Cutting Area (BCA) of the disc, a few centimeters from the hole in the middle of the disc. If the disc has this barcode, and the barcode matches the format of naming games (SCEx-XXXX), the disc check is finalized and the TOC of the game is loaded. If no engraving is found in the BCA, the PS2 will not boot the disc, unless it is a DVDR, and contains an encoded movie. (thus allowing home movie DVDs to be played on the PS2 as if it were a DVD player)

Thus, defeating this authentication is easy. If a pirate happens to have a disc press, rather than a disc burner, he can press a game with a glass master, and give it a barcode in the BCA. The PS2 will then play this game with no problem. SwapMagic is a pressed disc with a BCA, thus it can be booted on an unmodded PlayStation.

SwapMagic is relatively simple once loaded. The disc is nothing more than a special TOC, designed to work with a majority of games. Theoretically, once a PS2 loads the TOC off of an official disc, you can remove that disc while it is spinning, and add a burned disc, and it will play fine. However, SwapMagic allows you to pause the disc, and take it out safely. Also, the TOC on SwapMagic is designed to work with almost all games. DVD Double Layer games will not work with SwapMagic due to the larger TOC size that is required (about 8GB). It is still possible to play most double layer games though by doing a trick where you turn a double layer disc into two discs, thereby reducing the TOC size back to about 4.3GB and allowing the game to load with SwapMagic.
