Blinking Blue Light PS4

[[h=1][I[LTR]NFO] Blinking Blue Light PS4 Issues[/h] [ Edited ]Options

‎11-16-2013 12:23 PM - edited ‎11-16-2013 05:45 PM
Hi,

Some reports have been coming in from users with PS4 units blinking blue, but not entering the powered on state indicated by a white light as noted in thePS4 Power Indicator Lights Guide
1.jpg

Here are some of the symptoms associated with blinking blue lights issue:

  • blue indicator light blinking
  • no video/audio output to television
  • console powering off after blinking blue
This blinking light issue could indicate any number of causes including but not limited to:

  1. TV compatibility
  2. Issues with PS4 power supply
  3. Issues with PS4 hard drive
  4. Issues with other PS4 hardware

TV Compatibility Troubleshooting:

  1. Some users have indicated that updating the firmware on their televisions has resolved some cases of no audio/video being displayed.

Power Supply Troubleshooting:

1) Turn PS4 off completely

  • Touch the power button on the front of the PS4 for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps twice).

2) Disconnect PS4 AC power cord from electrical outlet

  • Only disconnect the plug of the AC power cord from the electrical outlet when the power indicator is turned off. If you disconnect it while the power indicator is lit or blinking, data might be lost or corrupted, and the system might be damaged.

3) Check parts A, E, and F for any conspicuous damage or anomalies

  • You can try using another compatible AC cord (like a power cord from a PS3) to see if that resolves the issue

A) AC IN connector
B )HDMI OUT port
C )HDMI input port
D )HDMI cable
E )AC power cord
F )To an electric outlet

Hard Drive Troubleshooting

1) Turn PS4 off completely

  • Touch the power button on the front of the PS4 for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps twice).
2) Disconnect PS4 AC power cord from electrical outlet

  • Only disconnect the plug of the AC power cord from the electrical outlet when the power indicator is turned off. If you disconnect it while the power indicator is lit or blinking, data might be lost or corrupted, and the system might be damaged.
3) After removing the plug for AC power cord from the electrical outlet, detach the other cables from the PS4.

4) Slide the HDD bay cover in the direction of the arrow to remove it.
1.jpg

5) Inspect the harddrive to make sure it is properly seated in the HDD bay. A loose hard drive connection can prevent the PS4 from powering on completely. A single screw keeps the assembly in place as shown below.
2.jpg

6) If you suspect possible hard drive damage or would simply like to replace the PS4's hard drive with one of your choosing, please refer to this article for full details
https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5107

  • Users can choose to install a new hard drive so long as it complies with these standards, it is no thicker than 9.5mm, and is larger than 160GB.

Software Installation Troubleshooting;

1) If your hard drive and power supply appear in good shape, you can try to booting your PS4 into Safe Modehttps://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5044

  • The following options are available in Safe Mode:

  1. Restart System - Ends Safe Mode and restarts the PlayStation 4 normally.
  2. Change Resolution - Changes the screen resolution to 480p when the PlayStation 4 is restarted.
  3. Update System Software - Allows the PlayStation 4 to update the system software via Internet, USB Drive, or Disc.
  4. Restore Default Settings - Restores the PlayStation 4 to the default factory settings.
  5. Rebuild Database - Scans the drive and creates a new database of all content. This operation may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items.
  6. Initialize PS4 - IMPORTANT: All data and settings will be lost by performing this step. Deletes all user data and restores the PS4 to as if it just came out of the box. This option is the same as [Initialize PS4 ] in the (Settings) menu. System software (firmware) is not deleted.
  7. Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) - IMPORTANT: Deletes all information on the HDD, including the System Software. A message that states a USB storage device containing the System Software must be connected, is displayed. Then you can confirm the selection. (You will need the full system update installer from http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps4/pc_update/index.htm with this option)

For additional service/replacement options please try contacting support:
https://support.us.playstation.com/app/contact_options
Due to the volume of contacts, we would suggest trying Live Chat rather than the phone line as the wait times will be shorter.

If you would like to assist us by submitting information, please share the following:

[h=1]Inside the Sony PS4[/h]
Contributed by C. Young, T. Crane, J. Morrison, D. James and P. Gamache
We proudly partnered with iFixit for the PS4 launch and lined up outside of EB Games in Ottawa for the midnight release. Excitement was in the air, to say the least. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been seven years since Sony released their Playstation 3.
You’d think that in seven years, Sony would incorporate a fair bit of design innovation and that is in fact what we have here. In that time span, the market has evolved from gaming consoles to full fledged living room hubs that incorporate games, movies, music, social and much more. Despite the home media revolution, Sony’s marketing messaging has made it very clear that the PS4 is first and foremost a gaming console.
The new PS4’s design blends Sony’s traditional jet black color with a slim and lustrous look. It’s very similar in size to Sony’s second generation PS3 and slightly more compact than its rival Xbox One. One of the first things we noticed was that Sony’s engineers managed to find a way to fold the power supply inside the box, leaving clumsy gamers with no peripheral power brick to trip over.

What’s Inside?
We know for sure that the PS4 is powered by a single chip custom CPU/GPU processor including a low power x86-64 AMD 8 core CPU block and a 1.84 TFLOPS AMD Radeon GPU block packaged in this single SoC. We also expected to find 8 GB GDDR5 RAM, 500 GB removable and upgradable hard drive storage, 802.11 b/g/n Wireless and Bluetooth 2.1 and USB 3.0 + Ethernet 10/100/1000.

The Main Processor
Based on widely circulated information, the PS4 uses a single die CPU/GPU and one main shared 8GB memory array. We therefore expected to see a single die under the main processor package, with no separate DRAM die in package, and no embedded DRAM on the main die. This is indeed what we have found. A huge monolithic die of 20 x 20mm.

The DRAM
Many readers will have seen Sony’s own teardown video of the PS4. From the view of the mainboard seen in this video, one might have expected the eight DRAM die visible on the top of the board to be eight 1GB DRAM ICs. In fact there are eight DRAM ICs on the top of the board and eight on the bottom of the board. Given Sony’s published specs giving the amount of main memory at 8GB, we can conclude that each of the 16 DRAM die are 512MB.

The Network Co-Processor
One of the convenient new features of this generation of console is the capability they have to download content while in standby mode. This is enabled by dedicating silicon to that specific task, such that the majority of sub-systems can be turned off while keeping that functionality alive. The PS4’s dedicated network processor appears to be a custom ASIC by Marvell, judging from the package markings.

The WiFi Module
The WiFi Module featuring a metal lid and Marvell package markings contains an interesting component. The WiFi engine behind the PS4 is a Marvell Avastar 88W8797. The Avastar features multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/gn/ + Bluetooth 4.0 with Low Energy Support (BLE) plus FM radio and an embedded PMIC block. Interestingly, this Avatar was designed for mobile applications like smart phones and tablets, but to date Chipworks has only ever observed this Marvell device inside one other product, The Microsoft Surface Tablet back in October of 2012. Do you think Sony got a deal on this? The WiFi module also contains two Skyworks/SiGe WiFi front end modules. The Avastar die measures 5.6 x 6.9 mm and was fabricated at TSMC and appears to be fabricated on a 65 nm mixed signal process technology.

Other Devices of Interest
The remaining major components found tonight include Samsung 2G DDR 3 SDRAM used by the network co-processor, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) device marked only as “1327KM449” and Panasonic’s MN86471A HDMI Communication LSI. Stay tuned as analysis continues to come out of our labs…
